Skritter Japanese App Reviews

My most used app

Unlike flashcard programs that Ive used in the past to learn kanji, this program actually keeps me awake. Its the only form of studying I can do for more than an hour straight without nodding off. It feels like a game. The only downside on this app is the price, $15/month is just too much. If you get the yearly subscription though, its $100 which is something Im more willing to stomach. Also, theres always iTunes gift cards getting discounted every other month or so from various retailers. You can usually find them for 15% off if not more. So if youre cheap like me and wait to get a discounted iTunes gift card before subscribing for a year, you can essentially get it for $85, so around $7/month.

Phenomenal!

The Best keeps getting better. Facility with 漢字 / kanji takes effort — there’s no getting around that. But who knew it could be so entertaining? Skritter’s has almost “gamified” the process of writing the kanji. There’s something so tactile, and immediate, and addictively fun with Skritter’s way of eliciting recall, and helping guide the learner to correctly write the characters. But it’s not all “games”, there’s some brilliant concepts under this pretty hood. Skritter makes full use of “dual coding” theory concepts. Meaning, you’re not just writing, you’re hearing; you’re not just reading a character once in a session, pretty soon, you’ll be asked to write it out. What’s wrong is gently pointed out (with correct stroke order points gently being given, as they’re needed), what’s right is rewarded, and what’s wrong, never a problem — it’s easily, comfortably repeated through the SRS algorithms. Soon enough, those mistakes will cross over into the “blue” zone, and effortlessly fall off your review list. With Skritter, you’lll find yourself reaching for that smart phone, in all those in-between moments, just because you can’t wait to get that last time right. And you will, too. Fast, and many more, besides. Progress with Skritter, is fast, fun, and tailored however you want to make it. I’ve waited a long time for Skritter. It’s worth every penny.
